1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI with a stock 1.8 liter fuel injected 8 valve engine. Stock HP is 90.  The car has 147,000 miles on it and before the modification was geting about 30 mpg while driving around town.

This fall the head was ported and polished to increase air flow and then milled to increase the compression ratio from 8.5:1 to 9.5:1. Two grooves were cut per chamber, a bigger cam was installed, and the intake manifold was ported.

To date the only other modification has been a upgraded exhaust system, with a dual outlet  exhaust manifold, Techtonics Tuning dual down tube, and autotech 2" cat back exhaust.

The car is running with the modifications complete. All that's left is to complete the tune-up and enjoy the results.

"I hope that the grooves will allow me to run the higher compression with cheap gas and the bigger cam with improved idle quality"
