The word is out at the local racetrack on the benefits of the grooves, people are starting to specifically ask for them. A SBC383 stroker in a high 10 second Race Truck broke the oil pump last month. Engine disassembly shows little damage so it's time for a rebuild. The heads are aluminum pro topline 220's. A cleanup port job along with 8 grooves will complete the modifications. Results will be posted soon.

The engine was started and the benefits were realized immediately

Before the modifications with the huge carburetor and camshaft the engine was cold natured. Throttle response was sluggish and the engine needed heat in the heads and piston tops before the throttle could be opened quickly. With out a good warm-up there was a tendency to bog off idle.

After the modification the engine idled cold. The stumble has been eliminated and the throttle response is quick and crisp. The Truck will be at the racetrack this weekend! Pictures and details to follow

The engine performed perfectly all week end with additional torque and horsepower as a result of the modifications. The engine provided more power than the Truck could handle. The owner is a big boy that adds more weight to the front of an already front heavy chassis. The 9" tires couldn't hold the power with that much weight on the front end. With wheel spin the Truck was still able to record an all time best of 10.71 @ 122 MPH.

Pulling out all the stops a lightweight driver was belted in. Weight transfer was improved resulting in improved traction. On a less than perfect pass the Truck recorded another all time best of 10.57 @ 125 MPH.

Two changes were made to the engine during the rebuild, a mild clean up porting and 8 grooves. The two modifications combined to improve throttle response, torque and horsepower. Additional improvements will be found when the chassis is modified to handle the additional power.
