To let you know - John John (JJ) took Western Canadian Championship on 85 Yamaha with Somender's 5 groove set-up. Shaving head 10 thou out-performed 3 groove. Jet sizing way down - performance way up. 4 stroke Honda was hole shotting 90% of every race. Thank you very much for helping us out. Happy New Year & best wishes to you and yours. kp / whitecourt

Grooves without a quench pad

How do you groove a head without a quench pad? Is there something else that can go into the chamber that is just as effective?

it looks like this is one of the cases where Grooves might not be of much use to you. Most cylinder heads provide a small area around the circumference of the cylinder where the piston still comes in close proximity to flat area. Any flat area outside of the actual gasket location can provide some extra turbulence during the stroke. But when the edge comes close to the gasket, it might not be a great idea to groove.
