Having read lots of articels about grooved heads and their benefits, I also want to groove my cylinder head. It's from an 1994 VW 2.0 Gti engine (code: 2E) - but as they didn't change the basic head design since the 1.8 Gti engine I think this could be of interest to many others. I tried to make an image - what do you think is the better groove scheme? http://bildupload.eu/u/090807/j/698281a5.jpg
[Maybe (2) is a bit overdone?] I read that someone (I think "automotive breath"?) says that the grooves should point to the outlet valve. Does the engine really benefit from this way of grooving? I see 2 other 'logical' ways of grooving and don't know which one is the best: - groove pointing at to the middle of the 'circle' - groove pointing at the spark
There are 2 more questions: - How deep do you make the grooves? As deep as you need to get a straight line from spark to wall? - My engine has a compression of 10,4:1and runs mostly on LPG (petrol only to get warm / if I run out of LPG). Can I increase the compression (taking the original value, ignoring the groove volume) to 11:1 or is this too much? My engine can run on 98 octane petrol - and LPG has (afaik) 110 octane [booth "european" octan values]
Thanks a lot for your answers! Greetings from Germany, Wolfram

Greetings ! Wolfram,
Interesting ! 3 channels per chamber will do ~ one channel opposite the plug and two channels besides the plug pointing at the valve guides to churn the stagnant compressing charge in the ends of the combustion chamber. Keep the channels narrow and as deep as possible sanding the sharp edges down for comforts. Increasing the compression ratios to 11 to One will bring out better effects and burning of LPG. Keep the ignition timing std. If in doubt please consult.
Don't get tempted with buyback offers ~ i am sure with no added loans you could drive a better car into the uncertain future ?
Happy times !

Thaks a lot for your answer!
And be assured that taking one of these buyback offers ("scrapping bonus"...) is so far beyond my mind, that I've never even thought about it. :) I still have to ask you about the grooving - to make sure I don't mess it up. What do you think about this way of grooving: - especially (1)?
Is it a good way to do it as described in this (and the 3 following) post(s)?
and the last thing: to get a compression ratio of 11:1, I have to take around 0,6mm off the head. Do you think this does affect the valve timing noticeably?
Thanks again for your answers!
best wishes, Wolfram

Hello ! Wolfram,
Just one channel will light up the Turbulence close to TDC. Placing 2 more is your choice ? No body has done any High Speed photography yet to display evidence ? Most of it is in " ones " imagination ~ because the end products are very similar from the other lay outs of grooves !
The choice is yours ! The Invention or call it the USP is the groove or call it the Channel ! Never seen before ??? Considered close to " Forbidden Fruit " !?
Peel it and " Get Stung by it ! Is all i can say !
It is over 9 years and the World still cannot understand the Hidden Potentials of the Scars ~ Is the Sad Part !
Breaking Barriers is very Challenging !
Go right ahead and find out for your self !
Happy Times !
