     To let you know - John John (JJ) took Western Canadian Championship on 85 Yamaha with Somender's 5 groove set-up.  Shaving head 10 thou out-performed 3 groove.  Jet sizing way down - performance way up.  4 stroke Honda was hole shotting 90% of every race.    Thank you very much for helping us out.  Happy New Year & best wishes to you and yours.  kp / whitecourt

Ford crossflow engine

I have a ford crossflow (4 cylinder) engine which has a completely flat cylinder head, the combustion chambers being in the pistons (bowl-in-piston). It would therefore be impossible to groove the head so I was proposing to groove the "squish" area of the pistons. As the crossflow BIP engine is designed to promote swirl in the combustion chambers anyway what would be the best way to improve this by grooving - single groove or multiple? Would it be better if the groove(s) was/were not pointed straight at the plug but at an angle to enhance the swirl? - any suggestions please?

Wonder how the piston & head surfaces look like with the valve & plug in place. Finally how much of the two really form into Squish ? Flat Flat heads with a bowl in the piston come from remakes of diesel engine surplus. Some Pix will help ~ To study the reverse situation along with the said crossflow effects ?

Pictures of head and pistons attached. I note that the head has a very slight recess about 2mm deep. I presume I could create a very shallow groove in the head opposite the plug. However the bulk of the squish area is formed by the piston. The "rim" of the piston is 10mm wide on the plug side and 20mm on the opposite site. The "bowl" in the pison is 15mm deep. Should I groove the piston and if so where? [img] [img]
