So, if what we are going for here is more turbulence, why not use a golf ball dimple style pattern all over instead of a few vertical gouges?

If it was so simple ~ All projectiles would have been dimpled to extend flight ? Dimpling combustion chambers roughens up the surface to promote flame bounce ? Just like ' Pot Holes ' Jarring the car ! Eventually fill up with carbon if not with emissions as they have no place to go ~ Inturn the grooves flush out and promote mixture motion and disperse the flame fronts better ! Before dimples took shape, there were many patents promoting some form of projections or the other on piston tops to cause mixture motion till they started to glow !
Before the arrival of the grooves every thing was oriented to squishing & compacting combustion chambers ~ Grooving diffused the ' splat ' out of squishing by springing up leaks in the form of directional squirts ~ Like blowing into the fire and seeing it glow ! Once the flames take over the same grooves channel the flame fronts to the very ends of the cylinder walls better ?
To sum it all up ~ Dimples are localized promoting bouncing, while grooves are directional & dynamic ! You need to carefully look at the night sky ~ It is filled with sparkling stars ~ You only get to see them, if the Sky clears up and the Sun is hidden far below the Earth ! ?
As a kid standing on the beach, i was told there is 4 times more water than land on the face of the Earth ! ? For a long time i thought the Sun cooled off by sinking into the ocean each evening and coming up fresh from the other side each morning looking bright ! Many years later i saw a picture of the Sun with spots ? So, why ' Golf Balls ' only.... the Sun is also dimpled ................... Some day we will learn to channel the heat ? sing !!!
