I am considering purchasing a 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser with the original 2F, 6 cylinder gasoline motor. It currently has 165,000+ miles and, while still running strong, would probably benefit from a good cleaning and rebuild. These engines were built very well and clearly have good longevity, however they also were notorious for getting between 10 to 12 MPG on a good day! (Also, not the prettiest trucks to some. Their short snouts and wider rear quarter panels garnered them the nickname, "Iron Pigs" ! )
I have been reading with interest those who have rebuild engines using squish bands ....but have not run into anyone working on a similar engine as the old 2F. As these were standard in all FJ55 worldwide to my knowledge, I was hoping that perhaps someone somewhere might have attempted the operation!
These are simple rugged engines. Parts are still available and I am convinced that, for my rather boring purposes, the increase in efficency gained from some careful grooving might be beneficial to the longevity, maintainence and gas mileage.
If anyone out there has had any thing to do with grooving an old 2F engine I would be very interested in speaking with you. If not, any thoughts as to how one might go about this and do a proper job of it would also be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,

Hello FJ55, I have 2 FJ40s that I plan on modifing the heads. One of them I will be adding a fuel injection system which will boost my fuel economy anyway. I will not be doing tests with the fuel injection system prior to the grooving modifications. It should be a remarkable improvement in fuel economy and performance. I will keep you and Mr Singh posted. Thank you Mr. Singh

Thank you Sir,
...I will either find or take pictures as soon as my student's finish their term. Thanks also to PEMIT! I was thinking fuel injection would be a necessary addition as well! I look forward to hearing of your adventures! I was particularly impressed with the grooving quality and placement of the fellow with the Volvo 240, however I imagine the specific piston chambers and tops of the 2F motor will determine the most appropriate placement.
Stay tuned!
